Works should be complete come Easter.

2020 is Valletta Waterfront’s year! The seaside spot and tourist attraction has just started the first phase of a project that will give the area one heck of a facelift. And by the time they’re done, it’s going to look real purdy!

Valletta Waterfront’s history

As many know, the waterfront was a storage hub for the Knights of St John. Precisely 19 historical 270-year-old warehouses, built by Grand Master Pinto at the height of the baroque period in Malta, stretch along the water’s edge and the historical area where the Knights of St John and European merchants used to unload their goods upon entering the Grand Harbour.

The Valletta Cruise Port consortium took over the previously run-down area in 2002 and turned it into a main-stay destination with a mix of dining, shopping, office and leisure experiences by the sea. It has become a spot visited by locals, land-based tourists and cruise passengers all-year round, and now it's all set to welcome a number of bespoke canopy structures that respect the historic fabric of the Valletta Waterfront buildings.

The project in the works

Stephen Xuereb, CEO at Valletta Cruise Port and COO of mother-company Global Ports Holding told us, “Over the last years, together with our projects team, our architects and our catering tenants, we have worked on developing a solution which addresses the practical needs of an outdoor destination, whilst respecting the historic and aesthetic values of our destination. Our focus remains to deliver a quality experience for all our patrons.”

“The project, costing around €2million, is split into three phases, allowing the outlets onsite to remain open throughout the duration of the project. And now, the project which started in the first week of January is making good headway, with the project being ready in time for Easter,” representatives at Valletta Cruise Port told us. “The project will enhance the atmosphere and comfort in the outdoor area of this iconic destination.”

We can’t wait to check it out!
