Malta deserves a round of applause for this one. Malta is at the top of the chart of Rainbow Europe’s classification which lists countries according to the rights they give to LGBTIQ persons. The latest classification was published by the International Association of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Trans and Intersex (ILGA).
ILGA established a set of 69 criteria to base its analysis in 49 European countries. Malta obtain a 90.35 per cent score, holding first place in the rankings, making this year the fourth year in a row that our islands topped the chart overall.
Breaking down the stats
1. In ‘Equality and non-discrimination,’ Malta placed second with 78.28 per cent. Finland placed first with 93.28 per cent.
2. In the ‘Family’ category, we came in second place with a score of 100, just behind the UK who placed first with 105.3 per cent.
3. In ‘Hate crime and hate speech,’ Malta came in first place with a score of 100, having the highest respect of human rights and full equality when it comes to LGBTIQ persons.
4. In the ‘Legal gender recognition and bodily integrity’ category, the islands took first place with 99.25 per cent.
5. Malta also placed first in the ‘Civil society space’ with a score of 99.75 per cent.
6. However, in the ‘Asylum’ category, Malta came in 18th place with 33.43p per cent. Norway placed first with 83.57 per cent.
