Wow! Photo from 1929 shows the first stone from Gozo’s breakwater at Mgarr Harbour being laid
The breakwater was desperately needed to shelter boats from rough weather.

A photo shared by Lars Newton to the Facebook group, Our Islands Photography and Art shows the Mgarr Harbour in Gozo like you have never seen it before.

The shot was taken on the 23rd June 1929 and it depicts the laying of the foundation stone of the breakwater at the Mgarr Harbour.

Works on the breakwater stared in 1929 but were completed in 1935.

One can even notice Lord Strickland in the shot, who was then the Prime Minister of Malta. He is the person wearing the white hat and black jacket that is standing in the boat right next to the concrete block.

The United Kingdom flag can also be seen waving in the background as many gather around the harbour to witness this moment in history.

A time gone by!
