A new eye-catching public sculpture of an eight-legged and headless horse has just been installed in Gozo.
Wieħed (which means ‘one’ in Maltese) is the work of Austin Camilleri, a local artist renowned for provocative public artworks.
Made of bronze and supported by a steel armature, engineered for durability in a coastal environment, Wieħed is located in Ras ir-Reqqa, within the limits of Żebbuġ, close to the Xwejni salt pans.
Mr Camilleri says it is designed to blend playfulness with conceptual depth and help people rethink the relationship between monument, landscape, and cultural identity.
It ultimately seeks to position itself as a lasting cultural symbol that connects past and present while coexisting with the natural environment.
Wieħed was one of four sculptures selected through an open call for public art in 2021 by the Ministry for Gozo and eventually commissioned by the Ministry in 2023.
