Wow! Malta Biennale 2026 earns UNESCO Patronage as international art showcase returns this March
Malta Biennale 2026 has received the prestigious patronage of UNESCO, marking a significant milestone for the international contemporary art platform just weeks before it opens to the public. The endorsement from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation follows last year’s distinguished patronage by the President of Malta and highlights the event’s growing global reputation.
Organised by Heritage Malta, this year’s Biennale marks its second edition after a successful launch in 2024 that firmly placed Malta on the international contemporary art map. The event returns with internationally renowned curator Rosa Martínez as Artistic Director and has already attracted considerable media attention abroad, with Malta being listed among must-visit cultural destinations during the exhibition period.
More than 130 artists from over 40 countries will take part, presenting their work across 27 national and thematic pavilions. Exhibitions will be hosted in 11 museums and historic sites managed by Heritage Malta, spanning Valletta, Birgu, Xagħra and the Citadel in Gozo. This unique integration of contemporary art within heritage spaces aims to create a dialogue between past and present, encouraging visitors to experience history through a modern lens.
The Biennale officially opens on March 10 at the Sacra Infermeria, Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta.
The Malta Biennale is organised in partnership with Arts Council Malta, Visit Malta, the Valletta Cultural Agency and Public Broadcasting Services, with full collaboration from the Ministries for Culture and for Foreign Affairs and Tourism.
