Remember this? A throwback to when cars drove straight through Valletta’s main gate
Vintage Valletta vibes!

Ever wondered what Valletta’s main entrance looked like decades ago – from the inside out? A nostalgic photo shared earlier today by the Department of Information gives us a peek into the 1960s, and it’s quite the treat for history lovers!

Long before pedestrian zones and sleek city gates, cars used to cruise straight through Valletta’s iconic entrance, side by side with passersby. This throwback image perfectly captures that everyday scene from another era, with classic cars and the beloved Maltese buses that are fast becoming part of Malta’s vintage past.

One of the standout details is the unmistakable signage atop the Phoenicia Hotel – a timeless landmark that first opened its doors in 1947, just after World War II. It radiates old-school elegance and instantly places the photo in a very particular, very stylish moment in Malta’s history, also reflected in the fashion spotted on the people walking by.

And right at the heart of the frame, standing tall as ever, is the Triton Fountain – still just as grand today as it was back then.

Feeling nostalgic yet?
