Wow! Did you know that the Mdina Cathedral Museum is home to significant paintings that date back to the 15th century?
The Marchese Gallery, named after Count Saverio Marchese, a distinguished member of a renowned family rooted in southern France and later settled in Malta during the 17th century, stands as a reminder of his philanthropy and passion for art.
As highlighted by the Mdina Metropolitan Chapter’s Facebook page, his generous donation, comprising a vast array of paintings, old master drawings, and precious Albrecht Dürer prints, formed the nucleus of what would become the esteemed collection of this museum.
Initially housed within the cathedral itself in the late 19th century, the donated treasures enriched the Cathedral Museum, laying the foundation for its legacy.
Today, after a meticulous refurbishment, the Marchese Gallery proudly showcases some of Malta's most significant panel paintings from the 15th century onwards.
Its chronological arrangement offers visitors a journey through time, gradually showcasing the artistic evolution of the region up to the 16th century.
