World-renowned Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin will be one of the star guests at the Malta Book Festival 2026, which will be held at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre (MFCC) in Ta’ Qali between 4th and 8th November.
The announcement was made by the National Book Council (NBC), which described Ian Rankin's participation as a major highlight for this year's festival, themed Uncover the Story!
Ian Rankin is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in crime fiction, with his iconic Inspector Rebus series earning international acclaim and being translated into 22 languages. Born in Fife, Scotland, in 1960, the author published his first Inspector Rebus novel, Knots & Crosses, in 1987 and has since written numerous bestselling novels, short stories, plays and non-fiction works. He was awarded an OBE for services to literature.

During his visit to Malta, Ian Rankin will host a free masterclass titled Why Crime Fiction Is Good For You on Thursday, 5th November at 7pm. The session will explore his journey as a writer and how he transformed his passion for detective fiction into a globally successful career.
He will also take part in a conversation with National Book Council Executive Chairperson and fellow crime author Mark Camilleri on Saturday, 7th November at 7pm. The discussion will focus on the author's longstanding relationship with the genre and will conclude with a book signing session.
Both events will be held at Is-Sala tal-Kittieba and are free of charge, although registration is required on a first-come, first-served basis.
