Witness Malta’s incredible Regatta race from the gorgeous Fort St Angelo this weekend
Not sure what do to this Freedom Day weekend? We’ve got you covered! On Sunday 31st March, Heritage Malta is inviting the public to a day of activities at Fort St Angelo in Birgu. Doors will be open to the spectacular fort and new exhibition ‘Behind Closed Doors.’ But that’s not all. You will also get the chance to witness the traditional Regatta race from the most strategic platform in the Grand Harbour.
The prestigious and mighty Fort St Angelo
Born to be bold and invincible, Fort St Angelo was constructed on a hillock, at the end of the Birgu peninsula, to dominate the Grand Harbour. Today, this historical military building offers unobstructed panoramic views of the Grand Harbour and the surrounding towns and villages. It’s definitely the perfect spot to watch the thrilling Regatta!
The traditional Regatta
The Regatta is a long-standing bi-annual tradition that happens on 31st March and 8th September, both public holidays in Malta. The rowing event that has been held in Malta since the Middle Ages. Traditional Maltese boats such as the frejgatini, kajjikki, dghajjes tal-pass and tal-midalji participate in this event. The seven clubs competing for the title this year include Birzebbugia Regatta Club, Bormla Regatta Club, Birgu Regatta Club, Kalkara Regatta Club, Marsa Regatta Club, Marsamxett Regatta Club, and Senglea Regatta Club.
Behind Closed Doors exhibition
You will also get the chance to jump back in time with Heritage Malta’s latest exhibition, which will remain open until 8th September 2019. Behind Closed Doors reveals intriguing narratives that took place at the military site during its occupation by the Royal Navy between 1906 and 1979.
This weekend’s special admission
Heritage Malta are offering a fantastic admission price of just €2 to visit the Fort, the exhibition and also watch the Regatta from this magnificent spot. Members of Heritage Malta enter for free.
The upper part of Fort St Angelo, which is managed by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, will also be open to the public from 9am to 6pm. Tours start at 11am, noon and 1pm. Tickets are €5 for adults, €3 for seniors and students, and €1.50 for children.
