Winter is coming! OK not exactly, but here’s why we’re looking forward to it
We love the Maltese summer but, at some point, winter starts to feel really attractive!

Melanie Drury

Summer is in full swing. We are pretty much on the third month of a hot, noisy, crowded, tourist-invaded Malta. But, while we continue to enjoy the beaches, the nights out under the stars and the very active social scene that attracts so many for a taste of a Maltese summer, we also begin to crave those other things that winter in Malta has to offer.

Cooler weather

Bye bye trickles of sweat at the slightest physical exertion or even the mere action of stepping outside. The air feels fresh and it is a joy to be outdoors without a desperate need to take cover from the hot sun in the scarce shade available.

Green country

The cooler weather has also brought the rain and the land has sprung to life, covering it in a blanket of green. It is a joy to be out in nature and to enjoy the fresh lease of life instead of parched, brown land.

Wardrobe wonder

Finally it makes sense to have a diverse set of wardrobe choices after a summer which makes you wish nudity was not offensive. You can actually mix and match clothing for some sense of style instead of wearing the lightest possible cloth on that sticky skin.

The attractions are... erm... attractive again

Malta has so much to enjoy and visitors truly make the most of what’s on offer: museums, historic monuments, events and so on. In the cooler months, tourist numbers have dwindled and you can finally enjoy attractions and activities without rubbing (sticky) shoulders with crowds of other people crammed together trying to get some of it.

Enjoy the silence

As the concentration of people reduces on every front, so does the sound of a crowd. Blissful silence can once again be enjoyed instead of wishing you could wear ear plugs all day and everyday to cut the noise of chaos.

The kids are at school!

For parents, this can be a real relief. They love their kids, of course, but working parents do have an extra headache to deal with during school holidays: keeping the kids entertained. School time assures a few hours a day when they are being looked after while you go about your usual business.

Cosy nights in with loved ones

It’s easy to get carried away with all the events, socialising and things to do in summer in Malta and winter brings with it a time for more seclusion with just those few special people in your life. Sometimes a hot chocolate, a movie and a warm blanket, shared with good company, is all you really want!
