Windy and unsettled: Here’s what the weather has in store for Malta & Gozo’s Carnival 2026
The question on everyone's lips: Will the wind disrupt the floats?

Francesca Vella

With Carnival just around the corner, many have been awaiting the final forecast for Carnival – a traditional celebration held largely outdoors, and particularly weather-dependent due to the beautiful floats that many await to watch traverse the capital and other localities.

The Meteorological Office has issued its final forecast – and let’s just say the weather is set to be a mixed bag...

A red weather warning – the highest level issued – is currently in force due to strong Northwesterly winds that may reach gale force (Force 8), particularly in exposed areas. The warning remains valid until 6am on Friday 13th February.

Malta Met Office

The first two main days of celebrations – Friday 13th and Saturday 14th February – are expected to be partly cloudy. While isolated showers are possible, mainly on Friday and Saturday night, no major disruptions are currently expected.

Winds on Friday will start strong (Force 7, West-Northwesterly), easing to moderate to rather strong (Force 4–5) later in the day. The winds are forecast to strengthen again on Saturday evening, however temperatures will remain a warm 18°C to 19°C during the day, dropping to 13°C to 14°C in the evening.

Conditions are expected to deteriorate on Carnival Sunday, with isolated showers that could turn thundery. Adding to the mix will be northwesterly winds strengthening to Force 6–7, and more showers expected on Monday. Temperatures will also dip, with maximums not expected to exceed 16°C, and evening temperatures falling to around 11°C.

The final day of Carnival, Tuesday 17th February, is currently forecast to be partly cloudy. While winds will remain rather strong (Force 5–6), conditions may be more favourable for those planning to attend the grand finale parade.

The Meteorological Office is expected to issue additional wind warnings in the coming days. For the latest updates, visit maltametoffice.com or follow for updates on Instagram.
