Where tech meets heritage: Relive the Sacra Infermeria’s rich history with its new virtual museum
Get a glimpse into life at the Sacra Infermeria so many years ago.
Ever wondered what one of Malta’s battles entailed? Or what actually went on in Valletta’s Sacra Infermeria? With the newly launched virtual museum at the Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC), also known as Sacra Infermeria, you can take a look back at life across the centuries and learn more about the rich history it’s got to offer.
The museum was launched this morning in a press conference which delved into the concept of this new AR Museum at one of the island’s most interesting spots. According to MCC Chairmain Dr Kenneth Spiteri, the idea came about around five years ago when visitors would request more information on this stunning location and its various halls. “We will be giving more life to Valletta, particularly the bottom part of the city,” Spiteri said. He also noted that it was done in a way not to disrupt the other uses of the MCC, particularly as a theatre and conference centre.
The AR Museum
This innovative concept is a perfect opportunity to visit and learn more about the history of the Sacra Infermeria that has served the islands well over the centuries. This museum puts a spotlight on the medical services our islands provided to locals and settlers alike over the centuries. “We are using new technologies, augmented reality, to tell our country’s beautiful history,” says Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi.
Tourism Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli described this concept as “a milestone we’re doing together as a country,” by “offering a more dynamic experience” for people entering the capital city. Prime Minister Robert Abela also noted that “museums are a bridge to the past,” and such a virtual museum can allow us to appreciate what our ancestors went through, while also being an educational tool for the next generation.
Through this awesome AR Museum and the app that has been specially curated, you can witness some of the day-to-day things such a last rites and kitchen work, that workers at the Sacra Infermeria used to do as part of their daily routine. What’s more is that you can also be part of the action witnessed during the Second World War, create your own scene and dance with main characters, and also have a close encounter with Grandmaster De Valette himself!
Opening details
The virtual museum will be available from 20th July between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Sunday. And get this! Until 1st August, it will be free of charge!
