What remains of Troy: Looking back at the props used for iconic 2004 film shot in Malta
Many Maltese were involved in this production starring Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom

Contrary to present day Malta, the island was relatively new to big budget foreign productions 17 years ago. Indeed, the (partial) filming of Troy in Malta drew much public attention, with many Maltese serving both as cast and crew for this massive production.

Starring Hollywood heavyweights Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom and Eric Bana, the production team filmed in Malta for three months between the months of April and June 2003, with the film released in the subsequent year. It performed incredibly at the box-office and ranked among the top 10 films of 2004.

Pictures sourced from the Facebook page Malta Film Props Rental serve as a throwback to those glorious times and also highlight the large amount of objects created through long and arduous months of pre-production.

Fort Ricasoli was used to host the city of Troy, for which additional structures and a multitude of props were built exclusively for this shoot. Most remains are still intact and are now conserved in a warehouse and available for rent to other productions.

When she’s not having a quarter-life crisis, Caroline is either drawing in a café, frittering her salary on sushi or swearing at traffic in full-on Gozitan. There is also the occasional daytime drink somewhere in the equation. Or two. A creative must be allowed at least one vice.
