Before the ferry terminal, traffic lanes and bustling crowds, Ċirkewwa was a much simpler place. A recently shared throwback photo by the Department of Information has offered a rare bird’s-eye view of Ċirkewwa as it appeared before the construction of the ferry passenger terminal - now a vital lifeline connecting Malta to Gozo.

The photo, posted on social media, showcases the rugged northern coastline in its more natural state, long before the modern infrastructure we rely on today was even imagined.

The image has sparked nostalgia among longtime residents and serves as a reminder of just how much Malta’s transport network has evolved over the years.

Today, Ċirkewwa’s ferry terminal handles thousands of passengers daily, providing a critical connection for commuters, tourists and Gozitans alike. However back then, it was a quieter stretch of land, used more modestly for crossings between the islands.

This visual piece of Malta’s history not only reminds us of the progress we've made in terms of infrastructure and connectivity but also stirs appreciation for the natural beauty that still surrounds it.

Do you remember your first ferry ride from Malta to Gozo or vice versa?
