‘Couture and Spectacle’! A striking new fashion exhibit opens at the Inquisitor’s Palace in Birgu
Experience fashion as art, history, and storytelling.

A new capsule exhibition at the Inquisitor’s Palace in Birgu is inviting visitors to step into a world where historic fashion and contemporary couture meet.

‘Couture and Spectacle’, a collaboration between Heritage Malta and Azzopardi Studio, showcases four stunning couture gowns designed as modern responses to a vintage showstopper: a blue tulle and taffeta evening gown by mid-20th century American designer Will Steinman, once owned by Peggy Mamo née Edmonson. The vintage piece, now part of Malta’s national collection, has been brought back into the spotlight thanks to a thoughtful donation by her family.

The exhibition’s dreamlike set-up, inspired by theatre and storytelling, explores the artistic links between Malta’s textile heritage and contemporary fashion design. At its heart is a creative dialogue between the past and present, with the four gowns from Azzopardi Studio weaving in elements of Art Deco, celestial symbolism, and alchemical motifs, drawing influence from the spirit of the 1920s.

In a further contribution to Malta’s cultural archives, Azzopardi Studio has also donated another dress to the national collection, one that previously formed part of their 2018 collection On the Museum’s Ruins, exhibited at the National Museum of Archaeology.

‘Couture and Spectacle’ is a beautiful reminder of the role fashion plays in memory, identity, and expression. And through thoughtful curation and collaboration, Malta’s past continues to inspire exciting new creative legacies.

The exhibition runs until 30th September, and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9am to 5pm (last entry at 4:30pm). Entry is included in the admission fee to the Inquisitor’s Palace and National Museum of Ethnography. Note that accessibility may be limited due to stairs, and more information can be found at https://heritagemalta.mt/whats-on/couture-and-spectacle/.
