‘What Happens in Between’: An exhibition exploring space, time and meaning at il-Kamra ta’ Fuq this May
A new contemporary art exhibition titled ‘What Happens in Between’ by Hui Sun opens on 1st May at il-Kamra ta' Fuq, offering audiences a thought-provoking exploration of narrative, perception, and uncertainty.
Curated by Melanie Erixon, the exhibition runs until 17th May, with an opening event scheduled for 11am on its first day.

At the heart of the exhibition lies Hui Sun’s distinctive approach to painting. Each work presents two carefully selected images that do not naturally belong together. Rather than forming a clear or continuous story, these paired fragments exist in quiet tension, resisting resolution, and inviting contemplation. The artist moves away from traditional storytelling, instead creating visual spaces where meaning is fluid and constantly shifting.
Hui Sun’s work challenges the idea of time as a linear sequence. His paintings capture simultaneous moments, folding time into layered compositions where what is seen and what is implied coexist. The relationship between the images remains deliberately open, allowing viewers to interpret, question, or simply experience the dissonance between them.

This emphasis on ambiguity transforms each piece into a proposition rather than a conclusion. Visitors are encouraged to engage actively, tracing connections, or embracing the gaps between images. In this way, absence becomes as significant as presence, and the true narrative emerges not within the images themselves, but in the space between them.

Born in 1985 in China, Hui Sun has exhibited internationally and now lives and works in Malta. His practice reflects the fragmented nature of contemporary life, blending historical and modern influences into evocative visual dialogues.
