A landmark achievement for Malta’s cultural sector has been celebrated after the Caravaggio Wing at St John’s Co-Cathedral won the prestigious Best Use of Digital – International award at the 24th annual Museums + Heritage Awards in London.

The accolade, regarded as one of the highest honours in the global museum and heritage industry, marks what is believed to be the first-ever Museums + Heritage Award received by a Maltese institution. The recognition places Malta alongside some of the world’s leading museums, galleries, and cultural attractions.

The Caravaggio Wing was praised for its innovative and immersive visitor experience centred around The Beheading of St John the Baptist, Caravaggio’s renowned masterpiece housed within the Cathedral. Through cinematic storytelling, interactive digital interpretation, and immersive projections exploring the artist’s dramatic time in Malta, the project has transformed how visitors experience the historic site.

Since opening, the wing has attracted an estimated 2.3 million visitors annually, with 95 per cent engaging with the Caravaggio experience and visitors spending an average of 45 minutes exploring the installation. The project also supports more than 50,000 learners every year through educational programmes.

Chief Executive Officer Tonio Mallia described the award as an extraordinary moment for both the Cathedral and Malta, praising the dedication and creativity of the entire team behind the project.

The award ceremony was held at the Hilton on Park Lane in London on May 13, 2026.

Well done!
