What an honour! Gozo has been awarded the title of European Region of Gastronomy 2026
On the 28th of September 28th, under the iconic Citadel, Gozo was officially awarded the prestigious title of European Region of Gastronomy for 2026 by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts, and Tourism (IGCAT).
The event, hosted by the Gozo Regional Council, was attended by several members of Parliament, ministers, mayors, and project stakeholders.

This prestigious title will mean a great deal for Gozo not only as a recognition of its rich gastronomic heritage but also as a catalyst for increasing its domestic product in focusing on sustainability and quality. The award provides Gozo with an opportunity to preserve traditional practices while embracing modern sustainable methods.
The Gozo Regional Council led the successful bid in collaboration with various local organisations, including the Gozo Business Chamber and the Gozo Tourism Association. The award highlights Gozo’s commitment to promoting its unique food culture, which plays an essential role in the island’s identity.

During the event, the regions of Kvarner (Croatia), Crete (Greece), and Gozo shared presentations on their culinary traditions. Attendees also enjoyed talks on the history of Maltese and Gozitan food by Dr. Noel Buttigieg and on Slow Food by Kurt Mifsud from the Mediterranean Culinary Academy.
Gozo’s journey toward this title began with an IGCAT jury evaluation in February 2024. The jury was impressed by Gozo’s rich food traditions, sustainable practices, and cultural heritage, positioning the region for further achievements, including a bid for the European Capital of Culture 2031 later this year.
Gozo has made us proud!
