Malta isn’t exactly known for its harsh winters, so everyone was ridiculously surprised when snow covered the islands this day seven years ago…
Taking to social media to commemorate this unique day in Malta’s meteorological history, Facebook page Maltese Islands Weather wrote:
“A widespread hailstorm affected the Maltese Islands on 30th December 2014. The air was so cold that hail covered extensive areas of land for up to 48 hours!”
But snow wasn’t the only crazy thing about the day’s weather…
“The temperature dipped to 3.3°C and didn’t rise to above 10°C for two days,” the weather page continued.
Less than a month later, on 26th January, the Northern and Eastern parts of Malta had witnessed yet another huge hailstorm.
Whilst 2014’s winter was definitely one of the coldest Maltese winters on record, the absolute lowest temperature ever registered in Malta was that of 1.4°C on the 29th of January of 1981.
Do you remember this hailstorm?
