We’ve got the travel bug! The Maltese are officially Europe’s top air & sea travellers
It’s official! The Maltese have one heck of a travel bug! According to Eurostat, the Maltese rank as Europe’s top frequent flyers and sea boarders, because let’s face it – is there any other choice to get off the island? Malta’s numbers were a cut above the rest of Europe.
“Airplanes were the main means of travel for tourists from Malta (63 per cent), far ahead of Cyprus (49 per cent), Ireland (43 per cent) and Luxembourg (42 per cent),” while in six countries – Romania, Bulgaria, Czechia, Croatia and Slovenia, “the share for air transport were less than 10 per cent.”
“Waterways were the main means of transport for 37 per cent of trips made by residents of Malta and 17 per cent of trips by residents of Greece, while in Romania and Croatia (both 19 per cent), Bulgaria (16 per cent) and Estonia (15 per cent) residents took buses for 15 per cent and more of their trips.”
And it’s no surprise we’re among the top boys and girls with the largest proportions of outbound trips. Malta’s score reached 68 per cent, following Luxembourg’s 98 per cent and Belgium’s 80 per cent. We’re small countries with big dreams and a massive (and constant) travel bug.
Malta’s overall stats for 2017:
1 A total of 807,000 business or leisure trips were booked in 2017.
2 Domestic trips reached 32.3 per cent. (We’re a small island with not much travel space. At this point, we’ve seen the whole country).
3 Outbound trips scored at 67.7 per cent. We just love to travel! #Guiltyascharged
4 We usually buzz off the island for an average of 4.9 days at most.
Have you got the travel bug too?
