Way to go! Can you guess how much waste was collected from Xemxija in under 4 hours?
The heroes of the Maltese seas are back at it! Local environmental conservation organisation Zibel has organised another sea and land clean-up, this time at Xemxija Bay, together with Raniero’s Adventures – Live Life and No To Plastic Malta.
In just four hours, the excellent team of over 50 dive, snorkel and coastal volunteers collected a whopping 1.4 tonnes (1460.84kg) of waste. “Xemxija bay is far from spotless but it’s definitely better than we found it,” Zibel wrote in a Facebook post.

The 1.4 tonnes of waste were divided into:
1. Recyclable ocean plastic: 2.95kg
2. Recyclable ocean plastic bottles: 89kg
3. Glass: 15.5kg

4. Metal: 31.04kg
5. General: 304.27kg
6. Tyres: 426.36kg

7. Fishing gear: 172.1kg
8. Batteries: 23.38kg
9. Bulky waste: 395/74kg
10. Bottle caps: 0.5kg
Zibel also noted that all the recyclable waste collected from this clean-up will be recycled by TerraCycle.

Locals flocked the comments section of Zibel's post with words of praise for the organisers and volunteers, thanking them their hard work in keeping Maltese seas, shores and natural areas clean for future generations.
