WATCH: Travel back to the 70s with this incredible footage of Malta’s roads
Surprisingly, most of the roads captured on video seem fairly smooth and pothole free.

As Malta’s roads undergo what feels like a mass renovation, we couldn’t help but wonder about what they looked like way back when tarmac was considered a luxury…

Well, thanks to a wonderfully nostalgic video posted on social media, we needn’t wonder anymore!

This footage, uploaded by the Facebook page Malta Audio Visual Memories, gives us a glimpse of what Malta’s roads looked like in the 70s – and believe it or not, most places are barely recognisable.

A few blink-and-you-miss-it moments scattered throughout the video show the many ways driving in Malta has changed over the years.

Check out, for example, how license plates were made up of five numbers, rather than the three-letter and three-number system we’re used to nowadays.

In a shot showcasing motorists driving around the Fleur-de-Lys roundabout you can also spot an old Volkswagen ambulance making its way towards the aqueducts.

OLD ROADS

Weirdly enough, most of the roads captured on video seem fairly smooth and pothole free – maybe there’s a thing or two we can learn from our predecessors...

Policemen can also be seen patrolling the roads on horseback; an event which, although rare, can still be spotted nowadays!
