WATCH: Malta features in Brit’s insane travel challenge… but how far does he get with €100?
He didn’t hold back on sharing his thoughts about the Maltese islands in his vlogs
We all love a bargain, especially when it’s travel-related, and for one middle-aged Brit called Shane, it was enough to see him embark on an insane challenge across Europe.
A self-confessed lover of travel, Shane challenged himself to journey as far as possible before returning to Manchester, with some pretty tight restrictions: “I’m currently on my way to the airport. I’ve set myself a budget of €100 and the plan is to see how far I can get on it around Europe,” he says.
As he drives himself to the airport in his white van, he reveals that there had been cheaper flights available than the one he settled on, but since it had been his turn with the kids the night before and he needed to drop them off to school in the morning, he opted for the cheapest late morning option.
He also makes another eye-popping admission: “I’m back tomorrow at midnight on Saturday, and I start work at 4am on Sunday morning,” he reveals, adding that if all goes to plan and he lands accordingly, he’ll be able to catch some sleep at the back of his van, which he has altered into sleeping quarters prior to his departure!
His first stop is Billund, Denmark, and after several hours touring the area (where he enjoys one of the finest ales he’s tasted in years), he embarks on his second flight of the day to Malta. Landing late at night, Shane makes his way to his hostel in St Julian's via Malta’s notorious public transport, and enjoys a short walk along the seafront before turning in: "Who's that guy?" he asks rhetorically, pointing his camera to a statue along the promenade, before adding, "nobody knows... looks like a Buddhist though!"
Amongst the places he visits during his short stay in Malta are the capital Valletta, and he doesn't hold back from expressing his thoughts about City Gate: "Gotta be honest, I was expecting something traditional... from the 12th century or something... that kinda looks like it was built last week," he says matter-of-factly.
Returning to Manchester at the scheduled hour, Shane has the following to say as he walks up to his trusty van: “It’s been good, I’ve enjoyed it… I hope you guys enjoyed it as much as I have,” he says adding “I’m gonna go get a couple of hours of kip.”
His full adventure sees him take three flights, three trains and a ferry, and is split into two separate vlogs, which you can view below.
