WATCH: 'Gorgeous young hedgehog' spotted at University of Malta but species' fate at risk
Hedgehogs are notoriously shy creatures, and their nocturnal roamings make sightings of the animal incredibly rare, which makes a recent video of a “gorgeous young hedgehog” strolling around the University of Malta campus even more precious.
Shared to Facebook by University lecturer Edward Duca, the caption revealed that the hedgehog had been suffering from an ailment: “it had an infection, maybe through a bite on its nose,” the post read.
The post explains how Edward and his friend got into contact with Nature Trust – FEE Malta, who revealed some alarming news: “Nature Trust - FEE Malta told us that there were many reports of hedgehog poisoning because of rat poison being left around.”
Edward offered some words of advice in case anyone comes across a poisoned specimen: “If you do see any hedgehogs that aren’t walking properly do phone up the emergency number 9999 9505, they are very kind and helpful. Don’t pick up any hedgehogs with your hands or if you’re not sure that they really need help and collection for Nature Trust to handle” he wrote.

They should be protected at all costs!
