Living in during World War II is something we can only begin to comprehend, but we can imagine what a relief it must have been for it to be over. This vintage footage shows locals’ elation of winning the war and also shares a glimpse into life in Valletta during this time and beyond.

“A glimpse of Republic Street during the 40s and 60s, after the Second World War victory. The happiness is visibly seen amongst people’s faces, whilst capturing the moment the British Army walked along this same street,” Malta Audio Visual Memories says in a post on Facebook.

Later on in the video, life in Republic Street is also clearly captured. Do you remember when cars could drive through the main city road? Nowadays, it is primarily a pedestrian street.
