Turtle mania! Third nest of the season begins to hatch at Gozo’s Ramla Bay
Gozo gets its first hatchlings!

Francesca Vella

It’s been a whirlwind week for Malta’s turtle lovers! Fresh off the excitement of yesterday’s hatching at Għadira, more tiny flippered friends have made their debut – this time at Gozo’s Ramla Bay.

While volunteers in Malta kept a close watch on Nest 2 at Għadira for any latecomers, their counterparts in Gozo were gearing up for their own magical moment. At around 10pm, unmistakable signs signalled that Nest 3 was ready – and over the next five hours, 20 hatchlings made their way safely to the sea, guided only by the glow of the moonlight.

Nest 3 was laid on Wednesday 18th June, with the hatching taking place in the late hours of Day 51. Dedicated volunteers will continue monitoring the nest over the coming nights to ensure every hatchling gets its chance at a safe start.

These moments are truly special, and protecting them is a team effort. If you’re visiting any of the bays with turtle nests (Ghadira, Gnejna and Ramla Bay), please:

  • Keep noise to a minimum
  • Avoid bright lights near the nesting area
  • Follow the instructions of on-site volunteers

A huge thank you goes out to everyone helping these endangered creatures on their incredible journey from sand to sea.

Have you been lucky enough to spot any?
