Malta isn’t just famous for its sunshine, crystal-clear waters, and rich history, it’s also a paradise for cat lovers. From sleepy strays basking in the sun to friendly felines eager for a scratch behind the ears, the islands are home to countless cats who have claimed their own little corners of our towns, villages, and coastal spots.
If you’re a local or visitor in need of some furry therapy, in honour of International Cat Day, we’re sharing five of the best places to find cats in Malta and Gozo.
1. Sliema Promenade & Independence Gardens
Early morning or late afternoon strolls here are perfect for feline sightings. Look for them curled up on benches at the Independence Gardens, perched on breakwater rocks, or patiently watching the world go by. There are so many in this area that a beautiful statue created by sculptor Matthew Pandolfino was placed there during Sliema Art Festival a few years ago.
2. Spinola Bay, St Julian’s
Along the promenade and tucked between colourful fishing boats, you’ll find the local felines hoping for some donations from a generous fisherman or restaurant patron. Cats in Spinola Bay are well-fed, well-loved, and generally not shy about striking a pose for your Instagram. Nearby is a sweet little cat village which acts as a sanctuary for local strays, cared for by volunteers. Visitors are welcome to stop by, make a donation, and of course, meet the residents.
3. Marsaxlokk Fishing Village
Where there’s fish, there are cats, and Marsaxlokk’s Sunday market is the perfect example. Keep an eye out under the luzzu boats or along the quay, where patient paws wait for a lucky snack.
4. University of Malta Campus
The University of Malta isn’t just a place for academic life – it’s also home to a thriving community of campus cats. These furry residents can often be found basking in the sun on the library steps, and . They’re well-loved by the university community, with staff and students often providing food, water, and the occasional chin scratch.
5. Valletta
As impressive as the capital’s architecture can be, cat lovers will be happy to note that Valletta’s beauty can be observed in its four-legged residents too, particularly near the area of Maori Bar by the sea, whose facade is one massive cat tribute!
Want to make some new feline friends? Here are some tips:
- Always approach slowly and let them come to you.
- Avoid feeding them unless you’re sure it’s safe and allowed in that area.
- Many cats are cared for by volunteers, so a donation of food or supplies is always appreciated.
