Malta International Airport kicks off 2025 with more routes, easier security & rising winter travel
July was a busy period, with over 1 million passengers pass through MIA.
Malta International Airport is soaring into 2025 with exciting developments across the board, from smoother security checks to new destinations across Europe and a record-breaking July.
This year has already seen five new airlines join MIA’s network, including LOT Polish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and SAS Scandinavian Airlines, bringing the total number of direct connections up to 109.
While Southern Europe remains Malta’s top region for flight connections (35% of all traffic), Northern and Eastern Europe are gaining ground. New routes to Helsinki (via Norwegian) and Copenhagen (via SAS), plus stronger links with Poland through LOT, Ryanair, and Wizz Air, have helped boost connectivity in these areas.
Travel’s not just about summer anymore! MIA’s push for year-round tourism is paying off, with nearly 40% of traffic in the first half of the year coming from winter months (January to March). And there’s more to come, with SAS extending its Copenhagen route into winter for the first time, and Ryanair launching a new Gothenburg route this coming season.
Travel just got a little less stressful too: passengers flying out of Malta can now carry liquids up to 2 litres in hand luggage, without removing them at security. The same goes for electronic devices – no need to take them out! This is thanks to the full use of new-generation scanners (EDS C3). Just be sure to check the rules at your return airport, since not all EU hubs have adopted this tech yet.

MIA
MIA is also in the middle of a major terminal expansion. The new non-Schengen arrivals area opened in June, now featuring double the number of immigration booths – just in time for the new EU Entry/Exit System launching in October. Next up is an eastward terminal extension – stay tuned!
July saw over 1 million passengers pass through MIA – 1,035,341 to be exact – with 6,375 aircraft movements, up 5.3% from last year. Italy reclaimed the top spot for passenger traffic (21.6%), just edging out the UK (21.1%). Rounding out the top five were Germany (7.4%), France (7.3%), and Poland (7.0%).
How many times have you travelled through the MIA this year?
