Top 5 TV shows to binge on when the sun gets too hot
It’s time for a date with your telly!

Kristina Cassar Dowling

Towards the end of August; locals who’ve endured the summer’s heat for the past months are quite eager to lay low and avoid the heat for a couple of days. The sun is great, it’s what keeps the Maltese jolly, but it also adds to our hot-blooded Med characters - sometimes we simply need a break. Hard to understand, but it’s true!

When the going gets tough, vegging on the sofa with a good TV series can cure the end-of-summer distress. These are my top picks to keep the summer vibe alive while cooling off in your living room.

Californication

A Showtime original featuring the aptly named Hank Moody - a writer whose idea of entertainment is far from PG-13. Set in sunny California, the seven seasons encapsulate the life of the writer and his ailing relationships. Somewhat tragic but altogether funny, Californication is definitely one for the list. The music throughout the series is an added bonus to the witty script.

Sex and the City

An oldie but a goodie. Sex and the City is set in NYC and digs deep into the lives of the four protagonists on the show, Carrie Bradshaw taking the lead in most of the seasons. Whether you’re new to the fashion-inspired show or not, a few hours glued to your TV will not disappoint. Watch this show if you’re hungry for excitement, a few good laughs and some virtual retail therapy.

Orange is the New Black

A Netflix Original with a whole lot of hype around it. Set in Litchfield Penitentiary, the girls behind bars share their backstories and establish a connection with viewers due to their touching stories. The life they lead while in the correctional facility is at times shocking due to the real-life situations shown on screen. It’s not all shock and horror; it’s mostly stomach-gripping funny and entirely relatable. Keep your eyes on Emmy Award winning Uzo Aduba, aka Crazy Eyes - what an actress!

Dexter

Ah Dexter! You should hate him - he’s not entirely a good guy, but you can’t help but love him and find reason in his madness. Set in Miami where the sun shines endlessly and the beaches go on for miles, you’ll feel as though you’re still living the summer dream - in a fully air conditioned room.

Skins UK

This TV show is not for everyone; it’s binge-worthy that’s for sure, but the British humour and questionable genre may not be your cup of tea. A bunch of teens make the most of life and live in the moment no matter the consequences. Seasons three and four are probably the best, although that’s entirely up for debate. Have a watch and choose your favourite.

No matter the show, keep the popcorn close at hand; you’ll be in lockdown mode for quite a while with this meaty list!
