Some much-needed TLC works for the ravelin outside Gozo’s grand citadel are underway! Announced this morning, the works (which are expected to cost about €65,000) will see the triangular structure’s restoration and rehabilitation.
The works will be done in two phases; firstly, the existing paving and soil will be removed. Secondly, waterproofing carpeting will be laid on a bed of concrete with the paving of the ravelin being done with upper coralline limestone. The area will also be regenerated with appropriate lighting and outdoor furniture.

This is being done to eliminate the infiltration of water in parts of the ravelin which was not only damaging the walls of the structure, but also damaging archaeological remains part of the wall that date back to Roman times.
“Over time, the strategic structure of the Citadel’s Ravelin was modified numerous times and barely resembles the original one built by the Knights of St John,” says director of Cultural Heritage John Xuereb said. However, this structure is still of historic importance and as the directorate responsible for the protection of the Citadel, we felt it was our duty for appropriate restoration to be done so that this historic heritage is enjoyed in the years to come.”
