This talented young fashion designer is storming the islands with his bold designs
Jayden Curmi is the creative mind behind JAY.
Allow us to introduce you to a 21 year old fashion designer who’s storming the islands with his bold and edgy designs. Jayden Curmi’s line JAY is bringing new ideas to the market, and he’s making quite the statement. This young designer shares his story and his journey in cultivating his brand.
“I have always had a great interest in art in general. From a young age I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in this industry,” shares Jay as he takes us on his voyage into the world of fashion. His passion started when he was young: “my mother always narrates how I was never interested in other subjects but always excelled in art. It was my favourite subject at school, and I chose to focus on the subject at post-secondary level.”
2018 saw Jay achieve an Advanced Diploma in Art, Fashion and Design, but when that was done, he knew that furthering his studies there was not the way forward for him. “I started off by illustrating fashion designs and creating visual representations of dresses. Then it was time to bring my ideas to life. I went on to create my first dress, and since then, I have always been inspired to learn and develop my fashion skills.”
He started experimenting with new materials and getting to know the tips and tricks of sewing. “I went to several fashion shows which gave me the confidence and inspiration to start working on my goals. Since then I have never looked back and plan on creating more and more dresses.”
When it comes to inspiration, Jay gets most of his from his daily life, filled with “natural views, travelling, music and even movies. I use day-to-day visual aspects and combine them with my imagination to create certain dresses. My biggest inspiration is dresses which are flowy and consist of a lot of fabric. I am still open to creating different looks however that is what inspires JAY at the moment.”
Apart from spending time in nature to get his inspiration going, Jay also relaxes by spending time with his family and friends. “I personally value this time greatly as the people around me help me to stay in a positive state of mind. This allows me to be more confident and motivated in my career.” But there are other things too: “I also love travelling and discovering new places which I can seek further inspiration from. Apart from this I must admit, I am a shopaholic. I’ve always been in love with designer pieces, so every now and then I do treat myself to something special. I spend a lot of time following the current trends and listening to my favourite artists.”
Jayden’s future with JAY is brighter than the sun! At the moment, he’s buzzing away with several projects that he hopes to launch in the near future. “I plan on creating more dresses and eventually showcasing them in my own runway show. Even though I dream big, I will always keep my feet to the ground and hold on to values which made me who I am today. I am grateful for what I have achieved and look forward to see what the future holds.”
