If you’re a fan of Maltese landscape shots, you’ve undoubtedly come across one of Jean-Paul Borg’s photos. Known under the moniker Kappa Vision, Jean-Paul’s photos are not only nostalgic but also come with a description of the location being papped on his dedicated Facebook page, giving further context to those who are not familiar with the area. Jean-Paul explains the aim behind his venture: “the page highlights the good and bad of our islands, our culture, our heritage and the Maltese way of life.”

His photographic mission started as a personal hobby three years ago. Posting daily, if not multiple times a day, and categorically divided by locality, Jean-Paul’s consistent work has earned him a massive online following: “I’ve reached nearly 10,000 followers without any backing or advertisements,” he admits, adding that any expenses related to camera gear, time invested and transport were entirely his own. His pride at not missing a single day’s posting is evident and he harbours high hopes for the page’s future. “I hope to keep going forever,” he confesses.

The mission is still the same now, with consistent daily updates, sometimes even multiple times a day. “I haven’t missed a single day,” Jean-Paul reveals. His relentless pursuit has paid off, and his love of photography and Maltese heritage and culture has translated into thousands of followers.

Having recently moved back to his hometown of Gzira after five years living in Gozo, Jean-Paul admits that he likes both islands but does not prefer one over the other: “both have their own pros and cons.” The photographer has also explored Comino previously, but is planning to visit the island again in the off season. “Last time I went I didn’t take my best camera gear with me,” he adds.

His creative process is a highly personal one: “I combine my physical activities with photography, so all my shots are taken during long walks,” Jean-Paul reveals, “we are talking hours on end, rain or shine.” The photographer combines all of this with his love for knowledge: “most of the time I end up discovering places and stories that I never knew before.” To say he is dedicated is an understatement!

Taking up the commitment to post every day has been helpful not only on an artistic level but also on a personal one. “This project gave me the motivation to explore and do the trips around Malta and Gozo that I always wanted to do,” he says. Asked about his favourite photo, Jean-Paul confesses he is unable to mention just one: “I took so many photos this year that it’s hard to choose,” he admits.

Jean-Paul operates on a day-by-day attitude, and while his future plans may not be set in stone, one thing is certain: “I like to change after a certain period of time,” he says. “I need to stimulate my mind with new things and new ideas… so who knows!”

When she’s not having a quarter-life crisis, Caroline is either drawing in a café, frittering her salary on sushi or swearing at traffic in full-on Gozitan. There is also the occasional daytime drink somewhere in the equation. Or two. A creative must be allowed at least one vice.
