These Valletta arches are set to receive a major make-over, but do they need it?
The proposed project will include the demolition of the arches, replacing them with bridges.

The Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation are proposing the demolition of five existing arched bridges connecting a Valletta housing estate to Triq San Bastjan, opposite the area known as il-Fossa in the lower part of Valletta.

The bulky bridges, which were built in the 1970s, will be replaced with new, slender footbridges and railings which blend better with the surrounding historical bastions. The bridges’ construction resulted in the accumulation of storm water in the middle of the span, later resulting in makeshift holes being cored to allow the water to drain. Over time, the area has experienced paving and slab damage due to this.

The proposed project aims to also benefit residents in the area, who will have increased ventilation and better sunlight as a result of these new footbridges. But what did the public have to say about it?

Many are opposing the project, some saying that it will “demolish history” while others point out that the arches have “no decent history attached to them” and are merely a functional piece of architecture. Some are saying that the project is a “waste of money”, while others agree on regenerating the arches, “so long as they aesthetically match with the bastions” and that they will be a “big improvement” to the area.
