Then vs. Now! Check out these photos showing the transformation of Freedom Square in Valletta
Misrah il-Helsien, or Freedom Square, has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a residential and railway hub to a historic and political landmark.
In the early 20th century, the site where Malta’s Parliament House stands today was filled with private residences and, later, the bustling Valletta Station of the Malta Railway. This station was central to Valletta’s connectivity until it was damaged by bombing during World War II.
Following the war, Valletta saw extensive redevelopment, and by the 1960s, the station and surrounding buildings were cleared. In their place, an open space was created, serving as a car park and social spot for the local community.
The square has since transformed once again, emerging as a landmark in the Maltese capital.
Today, it houses the modern Parliament House, a symbol of Maltese democracy, designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano.
