The oldest building in the Capital! Check out this 458-year-old church in the heart of Valletta
Dating back to 1566, the Our Lady of Victory church is a historic gem in the heart of the capital.
Steeped in over four centuries of history, the illustrious Our Lady of Victory stands as a testament to the triumph of the Knights of Malta in the Great Siege. Dating back to 1566, this enchanting structure is the oldest building in the Capital, Valletta. Conceived as a tribute to the heroic victory over the Turks, the church was a fitting inaugural establishment for the city.
The construction of Our Lady of Victory was made possible by the generous funding of Grandmaster Jean Parisot de Valette, who found his final resting place within the crypt just two years later. By 1617, the esteemed church was declared the parish church of the Order of St. John.
Over the years, the building underwent renovations, including an expansion of the sacristy and a new baroque façade in the mid-18th century. The church endured the ravages of World War II but was ultimately dedicated to Our Lady of Victory.
Recently restored to its former resplendent glory, Our Lady of Victory remains an essential destination for any visitor to Valletta.
As you step into its hallowed halls, you can't help but feel a connection to the past, where history and architectural grandeur converge in captivating harmony.
