The silent bell will ring again! Second phase of restoration begins at the Siege Bell Memorial in Valletta
The bell stands as a symbol of remembrance and resilience

Francesca Vella

For decades, the towering Siege Bell Memorial in Valletta has stood as a solemn tribute to the more than 7,000 lives lost during World War II in Malta. Though its massive bell once tolled daily at noon, its chimes have been silent for years due to structural challenges.

The ongoing restoration works by Heritage Malta are now starting a new phase, which will enhance the surrounding area and improve the monument’s overall appeal.

The first phase of the restoration project focused on the structural repair of the memorial and the restoration of the bell’s bronze mechanism, ensuring its integrity for future generations.

The improvements of the second phase will include the installation of new perimeter railings for security, as well as upgraded paving to beautify the space. In addition, a CCTV system will be put in place to further safeguard the area, and bespoke designer lighting will be added. This new lighting will allow visitors to appreciate the monument both during the day and at night, ensuring the memorial’s stunning design is visible at all times, even from across the Grand Harbour!

This phase will also see the restoration of the internal bastion walls and the superior slopes surrounding the site. A special restoration will be carried out on the sculpture of the Unknown Soldier, a beautiful bronze tribute to the soldier who is buried at sea in front of the bell.

Have you ever stopped to admire the bell and the Unknown Soldier statue?
