Situated in the heart of Valletta, Is-Suq Tal-Belt is known for its rich heritage and culinary diversity. Also known as The Covered Market or Valletta Food Market, this iconic venue is more than just a place to eat; it’s a cultural hub that brings people together through a shared love of food.

What sets Is-Suq Tal-Belt apart is its unique offering of more than 12 different culinary experiences under one roof, making it one of the largest and most diverse food destinations in Malta. From traditional Maltese flavours to international cuisines such as Turkish, Mexican, Italian, American, Indian, and more, the food court caters to every palate.

Whether you're in the mood for pizza, tacos, burgers, pasta, or a sweet dessert, there's something for everyone to enjoy. It’s a place where friends and families can come together and explore different dishes from around the world – all in one sitting.

However, the market’s story doesn’t start with its modern culinary fame. Is-Suq Tal-Belt’s history dates back to the 19th century, when it was originally constructed between 1859 and 1861 during British rule. Designed by Hector Zimelli, it was the first building in Malta made predominantly of cast iron and served as a central marketplace for fresh produce and other goods. Over time, it fell into disrepair and was used for various purposes, including as a temporary supermarket and even storage space.

In the 1980s, efforts were made to rebrand the site as a shopping arcade under the name Ixtri Malti (Buy Maltese), but the initiative did not gain traction. The market continued to deteriorate over the years, eventually leading to a major restoration project in 2017.

The historic structure was beautifully restored and transformed into the bustling market it is today. Great care was taken to preserve its architectural integrity while introducing modern amenities. The result is a harmonious blend of heritage and innovation, where vaulted ceilings and original ironwork meet vibrant food stalls and contemporary design.

Beyond the food court, Is-Suq Tal-Belt also features a full-service Arkadia Foodstore on Level -1. Here, customers can shop for fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, artisanal products, and daily essentials, making it a one-stop shop for both groceries and dining.

For those seeking a more relaxed dining experience, the Bus Stop Lounge, offers casual dining throughout the day. Inside, guests are welcomed by a Coffee Bar on the left and a Central Bar on the right, serving everything from smoothies and teas to local wines and craft beers.

At its core, Is-Suq Tal-Belt is a celebration of food, community, and Maltese heritage. With a mission to promote sustainable practices and preserve its historical significance, the market invites both locals and tourists to experience the soul of Valletta – one bite at a time.
