January 2026 is certainly living up to its reputation, with Maltese Islands Weather dubbing it ‘the Januariest of Januaries’...and the numbers seem to back it up too.
Rain has fallen on 18 out of the first 27 days of the month, pushing the national average rainfall to around 20mm above the seasonal norm. It’s official: this is the wettest January Malta has experienced since 2009.
And the unsettled conditions are not over yet. According to forecasters, the final days of the month will continue to deliver, with more rain and strong winds expected before January bows out. While the persistent grey skies may test patience, this soaking is a vital boost for Malta’s water reserves, countryside, and agriculture, leaving valleys greener and reservoirs healthier.
And to the weather-weary residents: don’t grumble too much! Summer will arrive, as it always does, and when it does, it will stay long enough for people to complain about the heat instead!
For now, umbrellas remain a daily essential, roads glisten under frequent showers, and the islands are enjoying a rare, thoroughly wet winter moment!
Are you enjoying the rain this January?
