The incredible Grand Masterโs Palace in Valletta is receiving some much-needed TLC
The palace has been around since the 16th century.
The historical Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta is currently undergoing some much-needed TLC, and works are in full swing to restore the prestigious location to its former glory.
The restoration works
The painted ceilings inside the corridor are being touched up and restored, while the marble floor and halls will be redecorated.
The Tapestry Room, the former Parliament of Malta, is serving as a laboratory for the restoration works on the soffit of the Palace’s corridors. Restorer Francesca Muscat told TVM that they are currently removing and updating what others did in the name of restoration. “At the time it was considered satisfactory, but today we have more efficient methods and materials, so we are removing what there was to restore the ceiling to its original state.”
The largest intervention, Ms Muscat says, will take place where the Office of the Attorney General currently is. Once this is vacated, it will be replaced by an information centre for visitors.
The project is managed by the Restoration Directorate and Heritage Malta, and is being carried out thanks to a €10 million investment co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
A little bit about the majestic palace
The incredible palace is located smack in the middle of Malta’s capital and has seen it all. Built in the 16th century, it occupies an entire city block right in front of St George’s Square. From the Knights’ rule to the British period, and later becoming Malta’s Parliament, the Grand Master’s Palace has served its country well.
