According to Maltese Islands Weather, ‘petrichor’ is the pleasant earthy smell that comes after rain. Yup, we know the one! “When a raindrop lands on a porous surface, air from the pores develops small bubbles. These bubbles float to the surface and release aerosols. The aerosols carry the scent, as well as bacteria and viruses from the soil.”

Many locals welcome the smell, especially after the scorching heatwave that the Maltese Islands experienced just last week. But hey, maybe Mother Nature could hold off until September for the next downpour? We’d like to hit the beach a little more.
