There are tens of precious theatres around Malta and Gozo, most of which are hidden, out of sight, and nestled within schools or parish centres.
The open-air theatre called The Blue Arena, which is located in Zabbar, is one of those gems, and is located at the back of the Zabbar Band Club, the gathering spot for the musical community of the southern town.
Although the club was built in the 19th century, this stunning site, with a capacity of approximately 400 people, was reportedly built in the 1950s. The facade of the stage is an Art Deco beauty, reportedly the only one of its kind in Malta. It really is a cultural treasure, boasting unique architectural features, framed by an inky blue curtain - and sign to match.
According to local reports, restoration works are underway to give the theatre a new lease on life. The outdoor site has braved the natural elements for almost 70 years so it's in need of a good pampering!
A concert, marking the band club's celebrations for the village feast, is held every year at The Blue Arena. And, over the past few years, local Maltese bands have often made use of these hidden theatres for shows and performances. Last summer, local band Brodu also performed at The Blue Arena.
