The heritage trust has launched a crowdfunding appeal to raise funds (€30,000 to be exact) to acquire two allied tanks of the Second World War to display at its new Military Vehicles Museum exhibition. The display is being added to the existing Lascaris War Rooms and the Operation Husky Museum in Valletta.
In a Facebook post, Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna said that the two tanks are a British Matilda MkII Infantry and a US M3 Stuart, both of which were in Malta at some point or other during the war. The Matilda was the backbone of the Malta Tank Troop, repelling enemy invasion from both overhead and at sea. The M3 spent a few weeks in Malta while on its way to Sicily in July 1943 as part of Operation Husky.

Today, only a handful of these historic tanks remain anywhere in the world. Both tanks, the heritage organisation says, will be the first ones in any Maltese military museum.
