Officials and operators will be meeting this week.
Every year, many people flock to Ghadira, one of Mellieha’s most popular bays, for a fun day at the beach. But in recent years, the beach has become inundated with sun beds and umbrellas by operators, resulting in a lot less space for the casual beach-goer.
Many have complained that they are unable to spread their beach towel on the sand since the sun beds and umbrellas have occupied seaside vantage points, leaving little to no space for bathers who don’t want to make use of these facilities.
Sun bed and umbrella operators at Mellieha’s sandy beach are expected to meet with Government following beach-goers’ complaints.
The Planning Authority and the Malta Tourism Authority are responsible for overseeing the placement of these beach facilities and are meant to function within a given area on the beach, which varies every year, according to an MTA spokeswoman who spoke to Times of Malta last year.
Hopefully, the matter will be cleared up soon, for all beach lovers to enjoy the bay in which ever way they want to, sun bed or not!
