A cool concept to get familiar with, pronto.
Textile waste has become a growing concern worlwide, having increased by 811 per cent since 1960 according to Supply Chain Dive, a website that provides original data analysis on current happenings. To combat this, locals and celebrities alike have been promoting sustainable fashion, which is the next big step for the Maltese fashion industry.
Local influencer Tamara Webb recently made the decision to donate clothing, shoes, accessories and a variety of other items on popular app DEPOP, which promotes sustainable fashion by encouraging users to buy second-hand items rather than purchasing new clothes in-store. Tamara is doing just this, but has stated that while she’ll be clearing out her closest, she will be donating the funds gathered from selling her clothes to a charity of her choice.
And in just a few days, Tamara has sold quite a chunk of her belongings posted on DEPOP, so there’s definitely a trend happening! We love this idea, and there's lots more you can do too... here are some local spots where you can shop or be inspired to shop sustainably!
1. Bumble Bee Shoppee
This online thrift store has been around since the start of 2019, and its main goal is to collect donations from people who have clothes they no longer use, and would like to sell. They even give 20 per cent of their profits to a local environmental organisation! What’s even cooler is that you can catch them this Sunday 25th August in Birgu, where they will be hosting a car boot sale.
2. Atelier Arya
Located in the heart of Sliema, Atelier Arya is a lovely concept boutique that aims to be sustainable and ethical – plus, how can you resist owning something hand-picked and unique? #Goals
3. Coach and I Lifestyle
Coach and I Lifestyle boutique is all about providing artisanal, hand-made and quality products to their customers. They pick the best options they can find on the market that are sustainable and environmentally conscious products, making sure they and their customers are doing their part in conserving the environment.
4. Fashion Revolution Malta
Fashion Revolution Malta’s aim is to acquire transparency within the fashion industry, and just like all the ones mentioned above, their goal is sustainability in fashion. In fact, they have created a map of places in Malta where one can repair and/or extend the life of their ‘adored, yet worn out clothing’ so that it wouldn’t have to be thrown out!
5. Alaria
Recently launched Alaria shines a light on ethically sourced products made by Artisan communities from across the world. Their mission is to provide items that are socially responsible, as well as ethical. You can find them on Instagram as well as Facebook.
