It’s official! The European Parliament has voted in favour of the proposal to end summer and winter time switches by 2021.
Each EU member state will have to decide which time it wants to stick to by 2021. Those preferring summer time will make their final clock change on the last Sunday of March 2021, and those opting for the standard (winter) time will adjust their clocks in October 2021 for the last time.
Many MEPs backed the Commission’s proposal to end the bi-yearly time switch, however they voted to postpone the date for this implementation from 2019 to 2021. Out of 4.6 million responses to an assessment, 84 per cent were in favour of ending clock changes.
The time changes have been occurring since 1980, with countries switching to summer time on the last Sunday of March and back to winter time on the last Sunday of October. What will Malta choose?
