Discover Malta’s hidden underground railway station with guided tours by the Malta Railway Foundation.
History lovers, this one’s for you! The Malta Railway Foundation, in collaboration with the Floriana Local Council, is once again opening the doors to one of the island’s most fascinating historic spots: Malta’s only underground railway station.
Hidden beneath Floriana, this Victorian underground station offers a rare glimpse into a bygone era. It was built as part of the Malta Railway, which first began operations on 28th February 1883 – just 25 years after the launch of the London Underground – and was designed by the same architects and engineers who worked on the early British system.
Stepping inside feels like travelling back in time to the age of steam and stone tunnels, reminiscent of London’s oldest tube stations. Visitors can join one of several guided tours throughout the day at 10:00, 11:30, 14:00, 15:30, and 17:00.
There’s no fee to attend, but as the Malta Railway Foundation is a voluntary organisation, donations are appreciated to help preserve this incredible piece of Maltese history.
Don’t miss it!
