Did you know that the first modern sundial in Qormi was designed by a Maltese priest?
This vertical sundial can be found at St. Sebastian Church.

Lyndsey Grima

At St. Sebastian Church in Qormi stands a remarkable testament to faith, science, and artistry - a vertical sundial designed in 1978 by Fr. George Fenech, a local priest and distinguished scholar.

Bearing the Maltese inscription from Psalm 35:8, “God created the sun to rule over the day,” the sundial beautifully merges spiritual reflection with scientific precision.

Fr. George Fenech, remembered for his deep intellect and devotion, served as a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Malta before following his religious calling. After retiring from academia, he pursued further studies in Rome, where he was ordained a priest in 1966.

His fascination with astronomy and mathematics later inspired him to design several modern sundials across Malta; each a unique blend of geometry, craftsmanship, and faith.

The St. Sebastian sundial remains the first and most iconic of his creations, symbolising both the measurement of time and the divine order governing it.

Have you ever seen this sundial in person?
