Step back in time! Normally closed, Ta’ Mintna Catacombs will open to the public this Sunday
It’s all happening on the 27th of October.
A special opportunity awaits history enthusiasts and curious visitors in Malta as Heritage Malta opens the doors to the usually closed site of Ta' Mintna Catacombs on Sunday 27th of October.
Originally documented by A.A. Caruana in his seminal work 'Report on the Phoenician and Roman Antiquities in the Group of islands of Malta' (1888), Ta' Mintna Catacombs is a treasure trove of Maltese archaeology.
The catacombs consist of three separate hypogea, which were later joined together to serve as a well in more recent history, explored by Caruana and Strickland.
Visitors to this site can expect to witness unique features within the catacomb's structure. The central hypogeum stands out with its exceptionally well-preserved triclinium, a rock-cut dining arrangement used for commemorative meals, and two rows of pyramidal lamp holes that face it.
The flanking hypogea, on the other hand, are known for their exquisite decoration, particularly on the window tombs.
The Ta' Mintna Catacombs will be open from 10am till midday, and tickets are priced at €2 for adults. Children up to 11 years old and Heritage Malta members can enter free of charge. There will also be an exclusive curator’s tour at 9am in English, for which visitors will need to pre-book online or at any Heritage Malta Museum or site. The cost for the tour is €15 per person, with a maximum of 10 participants
