Spritz, beaches & glorious sunsets! Malta's summer 2019 in 14 pictures
Here's how the summer is turning out, so far.

Melanie Drury

Summer in Malta always brings its seasonal pleasures. It’s not too hard to take a guess that it involves a lot of splashing around in the water, especially when it’s as hot as this summer is turning out to be. And there are other things, of course, such as those highly Instagrammable moments that flood your newsfeed. Let’s take a look at some classic shots of Malta's summer 2019.

The Aperol Spritz

Instagram alert. There’s something just so effortlessly glamorous about this favourite summer drink. Maybe it’s just the colour.

Swimming in crystalline waters

Anywhere you go on the islands, the sea is as clear as can be. You really can’t beat that.

Diving and other water sports

Make the most of the warm waters and great visibility by exploring as much as you can through various activities in and under the sea.

The butt shot

Another Instagram alert. It’s not hard to understand why this popular shot would attract attention and more than a few likes!

The busy beaches

With everyone taking to the sea, it can get a little crowded at the beach sometimes. It’s just one of the symptoms of summer (and you can get around that!)

The Comino pineapple

Pineapples aren’t a local fruit but this clever salesman has put Comino on the map for the sheer number of pineapple shots floating on Instagram since he set up business.

Idle time or party time by the pool

One way to avoid the beach crowds is to take to the pool. It is also a great venue for a summer party, wouldn’t you agree?

The sunburn

Take it easy, for the sun is far more fierce than first meets the eye. Tread carefully.

The quest for shade

In fact, if you’re sensible, you’ll keep out of the direct sun as much as you can. We reckon the whole island should copy the clever idea seen in this Zabbar street.

Lunch on the sea (almost)

The waves are lapping at your feet, quite literally. Gozo’s Xlendi offers a choice of seaside restaurants that are almost on the water! How wonderful.

Tourists on a tour

Set the sea aside for a moment - what else is common in summer? Tourists. You can see some here on a tour of the old capital of Mdina.

It’s festa time

This is a big attraction for the locals, who like nothing better but to celebrate their village festa, dedicated to the patron saint of their parish church. Expect decorative lights, music, fireworks and lots of goodies.

Beautiful sunsets

Watch a sunset daily and you’re in for a unique spectacle each and every time. A little cloud just adds to the picture perfect beauty.

Nights out al fresco

Nightfall brings with it a much awaited respite from the heat and people are up late enjoying the cooler temperature. At a wine bar, restaurant, open-air theatre, or a beer at the local kiosk - you name it.

Summer vibes in Malta are fun, and people spend their time relaxing or partying. Locals throw some work in in between because they must! Yes, it’s hot in every way and we love it that way. Welcome to the Maltese summer.
