But how much do you know about this plant?
The Giant Fennel, otherwise known as il-Ferla ta’ Malta in Maltese, is an indigenous Maltese plant that boasts some incredible dazzling yellow blooms.
The plant is endemic to Malta which means it is native to Malta.
It largely found along rocky areas, abandoned fields and the footpaths nearby. Just take a walk anywhere away from any rural area this March and April and you’re bound to come across it.
However, it’s known to bloom dominantly in the areas surrounding Mistra, Selmun, Wardija and Xemxija Heights, the Majjistral Park, the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra precincts and Ggantija Prehistoric Temples in Xaghra, Gozo.
The plant is also used and consumed with food for several purposes including medicinal purposes such as the soothing of skin diseases.
And with that being said, if used in large quantities the plant can be poisonous!
